High purity of CO2 capture achieved with new technology at test site OMV Petrom, Romania

The ConsenCUS project has reached a significant milestone by successfully capturing CO2 with a purity level exceeding 99%. The CO2 was captured from exhaust gas from the OMV Petrom refinery near Ploiesti, Romania. This accomplishment highlights the effectiveness of the advanced electrochemical technology employed by the project.

The technology used in the ConsenCUS project integrates cutting-edge electrochemical methods that enable efficient CO2 separation from industrial emissions. This process not only ensures the capture of CO2at high purity but also provides a scalable and energy-efficient solution suitable for a wide range of industries. The captured CO2, with its high purity, is ideal for conversion into valuable products such as synthetic fuels, chemicals, and materials, supporting the transition towards a circular carbon economy.

Achieving capture efficiencies greater than 90% is essential for reducing CO2 emissions from industrial processes. The capture efficiency refers to the proportion of total CO2 in the flue gas that is captured by the system. With demonstrated efficiencies exceeding 95%, this technology proves to be a viable solution for significantly reducing CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.

In honour of the newly employed technologies at the Petrobrazi Refinery, OMV Petrom successfully organised the Pilot Project Event to show the installation to high level visitors. Read more about the event here.
